Chameleon flash video player
I’ve spent most of the year trying to get to this point and it all came to fruition very suddenly just before we broke up for the hols. The biggest change this year is that I have a new job (sort of!). Gillians post prompted me to reflect over the year, not something I normally do. (Whats the name of those images that change when you tilt them? I’ve been racking my brains but cannot remember!) Well this photo of Ross as he fell asleep last night sort of sums up a closing year! Tired and sleepy and I like the way the image on his book captures the Doctor between the 9th and 10th like the year regenerating. What is it with not being able to get content out of people? Its the bane of my life!!! So that’s my bit done, all I need now is content from the lads.

The template I bought from Flashvista provided all the Flash files and an html version which I thought was good value for ~£30.Īnyway, I’ve learned how a site based on a complex Flash movie can be broken down into manageable chunks and can make use of XML and text files to make updating content easy rather than working on the main movie. Now I’m not sure why I have spent so much time with this Flash stuff as I don’t intend to go into Flash sites due to the accessibility issues, I think its a case of having being a rebel for the hell of it and having fun being naughty! And I suppose, I should now implement a html/css version to redress the balance, for a Flash/no Flash option. A useful tutorial on Steve Nelsons site also shows how external text files acan be used to feed content into a Flash movie, very nifty. Ergh! So I applied the same principle and hey presto, the gallery is now embedded in the site! The slideshow also uses an XML file to bring in the image files.

Wey hey, simple and effective! And this bit of ActionScript, I am proud to say, I did manage myself!! I had bought an excellent Flash extension to build an image gallery for them called SlideShow Pro but since I couldnt get it working inside the site had clunkily linked to it. I couldnt get it working inside the main sites movie so Steve introduced me to the concept of separating major elements of the sites main movie into external movie files and getting them to play inside the main movie. It stores all the tracks in an XML file so the tracklist is easily changed. I came across this nifty MP3 player on Steve Nelson’s site and with a bit of help from Steve got it going. Now I didn’t know enough ActionScript (understatement!!) to rewrite the whole thing so went digging for another. The way the player was constructed, turning the sound off to allow listening to a video, switched off the whole movies soundstatus so stopped the videos sound. It had an MP3 player but they eventually want to put video with sound on the site. Firstly I couldn’t get the contact form working so replaced that with this one.

I bought a ready made template but have ended up ripping it up and replacing quite a few elements. Its the first fully Flash site I’ve done and I’ve learned quite a bit.

I’ve spent a lot of time on son Paul’s band, Inferno Atlantic’s website over the hols. Well I’m determined to document this project all the way!
